As with other fire protection equipment, Active Fire Curtains require regular servicing and maintenance to ensure they can be relied upon to function correctly and will perform to their designed standard in the event of a fire. Without regular inspection, servicing, and maintenance, fire protection equipment cannot unequivocally provide the protection they advertise, as daily wear and tear may cause damage that goes unnoticed but eventually stops performance. For example, without the regular testing of fire alarms, we cannot ever be 100% sure the alarm will sound in the event of a fire, and that fire doors would automatically close.
Fire extinguishers, to adhere to BS 5306-3:2009, should have a monthly visual inspection, an annual inspection carried out by a competent and trained individual, and after five years, will require an extended service. Similarly, fire doors, if in high traffic areas, with repeated, regular use should be visually checked daily, or at least every 6 months in low traffic areas, and replaced when signs of wear appear. So, the idea of maintenance and servicing is not a new one in the fire protection industry.
Do I need to service my Fire Curtain?
How many of us would buy a car, use it, and never take it for an MOT?
Would you feel sure of your cars ability to start and keep driving if you never changed the oil, topped up the water, or checked your tire pressure? Could you trust it to keep you and fellow passengers safe and moving?
Of course not.
To ensure your car is roadworthy, safe, and can last as long as possible, you look after it, carry out regular visual inspections, take it for in-depth inspections, such as MOT tests, and replace any parts it may need, until the cost of repair outweighs the cost of buying a newer model.
Active Fire Curtains can be contemplated in much the same way. While the average life expectancy of a car can be around 12 years or about 200,000 miles, if treated well, serviced, and maintained regularly, the average Fire Curtain can last for around 10 years, with regular servicing and maintenance.

How often should I service my Fire Curtains?
Active Fire Curtains, once installed by a skilled and qualified subcontractor will be tested fully on site before they are signed off. After this, it is recommended that all Fire Curtains are inspected alongside the weekly fire alarm test, as this will cause them to be deployed anyway.
Bi-annual, more in-depth inspections of every Fire and Smoke curtain on the premises must be continued and can be ensured with the purchase of an Adexon Scheduled Maintenance & Servicing. This provides clients with peace of mind and certainty that their scheduled servicing will take place, and that every aspect of the Fire Curtain remains standard appropriate and can therefore be relied on, every time.
What does Scheduled Maintenance and Servicing Involve?
Scheduled maintenance and servicing is different to the visual inspections you would complete at least weekly with your Fire Curtains. It is a service that is purchased alongside each Fire Curtain from Adexon, and we take the lead with booking in the twice-yearly servicing at a date that suits you, within your 6-month window.

After installation, scheduled maintenance would be arranged with you, and after 6 months has elapsed, you would receive further contact from our friendly office staff to arrange your next scheduled visit.
If you have not purchased your Fire Curtain from Adexon, you are still welcome to take up Adexon Scheduled Maintenance and Servicing, which would start once your account is set up, to coincide with the end of your last servicing contract. This ensures there is no period of time that your curtains are without servicing and maintenance, giving you complete peace of mind.
The trained and qualified subcontractor would visit you on-site and inspect every Fire Curtain in a large number of categories, including, but not limited to:
motor and electrical functions.
Mains power checks, including the security of connections, damage to wiring, and damage or water ingress to the control panel.
Battery backup systems including charging capabilities of the transformer, operation on battery back up alone, ensure batteries successfully hold charge.
Curtain deployment and redeployment is unhindered, and fabric moves freely through the guide.
Curtain fabric condition, checking for rips, tears, snags etc.
Check the positioning of the curtain once at the top, middle, and bottom limits.
Visual inspection of smoke seals, if applicable.
Visual inspection of key components such as the bottom bar, side guides, headbox, etc.
Physically check the barrel ends and bearings are secured to the endplates.
Check electrical accessories such as switches, key retracts, obstruction warning systems, photocells, emergency release buttons, and sound beacons.
Your visiting subcontractor will then fill out an inspection survey for each curtain and this will be stored with us on our system, and you will be given a copy with your quote for further work if it is necessary.

What if my curtain is faulty and requires servicing?
If required, your subcontractor will advise on any recommended or essential further maintenance, with replacement parts and additional works being quoted accordingly from our main office staff.
