Overview

We were appointed by Lifebuild to supply and install certified fire curtain systems at Dulwich College’s new library extension in London.

As one of the UK’s leading independent schools, the fire curtain systems needed to meet high-performance standards while preserving the architectural integrity of the space.

Project Requirements

Originally, three curtain systems were considered, but through consultation with the contractor and project team, it was refined to two systems:

  • Main Curtain: Spanning the centre of the open balcony – 7200mm(W) x 2760mm(H)
  • Staircase Curtain: Positioned by the spiral staircase – 3200mm(W) x 2760mm(H)

The systems needed to deliver 120 minutes of both fire integrity and radiation protection, certified to EN 1634-1:2014, while remaining discreet and non-intrusive.

Solution

After reviewing the site layout and fire strategy, we recommended and installed two FC1-120 fire curtain systems, which met the EW 120 specification and included:

  • Gravity fail safe and battery back up
  • Standard galvanised finish– selected for its low visibility as the curtains would sit recessed into the ceiling

To ensure a seamless installation, our team conducted a pre-installation site visit one week prior to check structural support, integration details, and surrounding conditions.

Installation & Results

The installation was completed over a two-week period.

As other trades were still active in the area, final commissioning was carried out during a follow-up visit.

To ensure long-term performance and compliance, Dulwich College opted for a two-year Planned Preventative Maintenance (PPM) contract, covering servicing and system health checks.
